Sustainable Business Award '2006'
The YWCA received the Waikato Management School Sustainable Business Award in August. Over the past year the YWCA has designed and implemented many initiatives to reduce waste and improve sustainability, such as the innovative work with food and its disposal using worm farms.
"The judges were impressed with the way YWCA had incorporated environmental and social factors into decision making and the excellent ongoing reporting of sustainability outcomes."
The Award was presented at the Westpac Waikato Sustainable Business Awards in August and the YWCA was among other well known businesses such as Fonterra, Perry Group and Newmont Gold. Hamilton YWCA subsequently won one of four New Zealand-wide awards in the Westpac National Sustainable Business Awards held in Auckland in October 2006.
Our Hall has had a Face Lift
Our newly refurbished hall is used for a variety of YWCA and community activities. Groups who hire our hall are delighted with the new coat of paint.
Cantec Services Hamilton Ltd was contracted to do the painting. Trust Waikato and SkyCity Riverside Trust both contributed towards aspects of the exterior and interior refurbishment projects..
New Heating and Energy Efficiencies for the YWCA Hostel
In 2006 we installed a new energy efficient boiler heating system, which operates during the colder May-September months. Clarence Street Hostel guests are very appreciative of it. This work was significantly supported by the Sutherland Self-Help Trust.
Hostel Co-ordinator, Riikka Anderson, originally from Finland, is planning more energy efficiency and water conservation projects in 2008.
“We aim to ensure a comfortable environment for our hostel residents. Our residents are a mixture of overseas medical staff working at Waikato Hospital, full and part time students on courses in Hamilton and international backpackers.”

YWCA Mobile Meals is having a plate drive.
Meals are served on ceramic plates but plate numbers are getting low; they are not always returned. If you have a supply for us we’d be delighted to arrange a pick-up of plates. Contact Kathy - Mobile Meals Co-ordinator.
